Sumner Crenshaw Art

Sumner Crenshaw is a budding artist in Frederick who paints semi-abstract figurative work. Read our Q&A with the Frederick artist.

Q: How long have you been an artist? Why did you start?

A: I’ve been an artist for pretty much my whole life; for as long as I can remember I was always drawing and creating. Even as a kindergartner I talked about how I was going to be an artist- even back then I had notions of grandeur (lol).

Q: What’s it like being a young artist in Frederick?

A: As far as being a young artist in Frederick, it’s awesome! I’m originally from Vermont, where the artistic opportunities are way more limited because of how rural the area is, so it’s really refreshing to be a part of such a creative community with access to DC, Baltimore, etc. I also really appreciate how supportive Frederick artists and galleries are- it’s a real community.

Q: What are your ultimate goals with your art? Fame? Legacy?

A: I’d love to be a famous artist, but I know that easier said than done lol. I’ve always hoped that I’d be the kind of artist that ended up in the art history books, but even if not, it’s really fulfilling just knowing that people connect with my work and are willing to spend their hard earned money on my funny little creations. And of course, I’d love to be able to make a living solely off my artwork; I’m not quite there yet, but I’m working on it!
